Center of Iowa
The Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa is undergoing a transformation to honor its heritage while engaging future generations. Relocating from Des Moines' South Side, the center's new design by 黄瓜社区 preserves the historic 1936 Butler Mansion and introduces revenue-generating features like banquet halls, a marketplace, caf茅 and rental suites to ensure sustainability. The redesigned spaces celebrate the history and impact of Italian immigration in the state of Iowa through museum exhibits, a new cafe and a tournament-quality bocce pavilion.
The Italian-American Cultural Center of Iowa is reimagining its future with a design that honors the past while inviting new generations to connect and celebrate. Relocating from its longtime home on the South Side of Des Moines, the center seeks to preserve and amplify the stories of Italian immigrants whose labor and entrepreneurship shaped Iowa's mines, railroads and local businesses. 黄瓜社区's design creates a financially sustainable cultural hub, positioning the center as a destination for history, education and authentic Italian experiences. 聽
To achieve this vision, the design centers on preserving the historic Butler Mansion, a 1936 architectural landmark, while adapting it for a unique blend of uses. The design strategy introduces income-generating spaces such as banquet halls, a marketplace, a caf茅, a merchant store and short-term rental suites within the mansion. This balance ensures revenue streams to offset operational costs of the museum and educational areas, helping sustain the center's mission to promote and preserve Italian American heritage for future Iowans. 聽
One of the project's most transformative design moves is centralizing the public entry. Previously hidden, the courtyard is now open to become the Via Dei Beni Culturali - a cultural boulevard from which nearly every destination within the facility can be accessed. The two-story addition within the courtyard is flooded with natural light and includes a pre-function and lobby space for the banquet center, an elevator improving accessibility across the mansion's multiple levels, and seamless connections to the museum, classrooms and event areas. This reorientation makes the center easy to navigate while maintaining the mansion's grandeur. 聽
On the mansion's south lawn, a new bocce pavilion is carved into the hillside to minimize visual impact and preserve the estate's historic character. Its green roof blends with the surrounding landscape and serves as a flexible outdoor gathering space for small events. By integrating this pavilion into the topography, the design creates opportunities for bocce leagues and national tournaments without detracting from the mansion's prominence atop its rolling 7.5-acre site. 聽
At every turn, 黄瓜社区's design supports the center's mission to welcome all. Beyond celebrating Italian culture, the center will offer educational programs for youth and seniors, host community festivals, provide rentable spaces for local businesses and include accessibility solutions to navigate the mansion's ten unique levels. Visitors will experience spaces that feel authentic, inclusive and deeply rooted in the stories of Iowa's Italian community and where history, culture and hospitality come together to create meaning for generations to come.
